Fifth Series of Talks for Healthcare Professionals

Stamboulian Talks
YEARBOOK
2021-2022

With regular speakers and attendees committed to the live exchange of ideas and to sharing information on the scheduled activities, Stamboulian Talks has solidified its position as a remote continuing education space. In 2022, this series of free, interactive talks streamed by FUNCEI entered its fifth year of uninterrupted events, which had peaks of rating during the pandemic because Latin-American professionals needed trustworthy information. The format of attractive, brief lectures is perfect to transmit interesting, valuable, or updated aspects of several healthcare topics.

“Our project stands out from the webinars most invited experts and the audience are used to,” highlighted Francesco Garabello, science journalist at FUNCEI, who is in charge, together with and Carolina Savignano, of Production, Communications, and Logistics at Stamboulian Talks. For instance, speakers must prepare the talks taking into account that the audience is large and diverse: doctors, nurses, biochemists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals from different countries within the region, with different social contexts. The public, in turn, has the opportunity to ask questions live or via email. “It is a great challenge for the speakers, but they have showed us great commitment when putting together the presentations, lecturing, and answering questions. Attendees acknowledge and appreciate the effort,” stated Garabello.

As in previous editions, the fifth series has dealt with topics from several medical specialties: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections, meningitis, celiac disease, opthalmology, hematology, respiratory infections, nutrition, neurology, urinary infections, infection control, vitamin D, gynecology, antibiotic stewardship programs, pneumonia, travel medicine, and HIV. Garabello explained that they took into account seasonality and health awareness days, fixed to spark discussions in the communication, professional, and public arenas. They also took into consideration viewer feedback, their suggestions on surveys from previous editions, and speaker proposals. “They are the experts, thus, they help us enrich the list of topics and events,” Garabello highlighted. New in 2022 were the six training sessions on lab tests, exclusively held for personnel from Stamboulian Servicios de Salud, CEMIC, and Helios Salud, medical institutions from Buenos Aires.

At present, speakers and attendees have more in-person activities in their own countries or even abroad. “To overcome this hurdle for the speakers, we offered them the chance to prerecord their lectures at FUNCEI’s studio, fitted with high-quality lighting, sound system, and cameras, and provide virtual and asynchronous answers to questions,” Garabello pointed out. Comparing with the first years of the pandemic, many more viewers log on from the hospitals and healthcare centers where they work. For those who cannot fit the talks to their schedules or who wish to watch them again, at the end of each broadcast the videos are shared on the Multimedia section of FUNCEI’s website; on the Foundation's YouTube channel, with over 780,000 total views; and on social networks.

Dr. Pablo Bonvehí and Dr. Elsa Baumeister lectured on acute respiratory infections during the pandemic at the first session of Stamboulian Talks in 2022.
